Message to our Northland Chiefs Families from Kevin McConnell:

Hello to our Chiefs families, fans and friends,

First and foremost, Mickey and I would like to thank you all for your kind thoughts and continued prayers.  We continue daily to fight the good fight and our Chiefs organization is truly a blessing to our family.

We have some exciting changes underway within our Chiefs organization that Mickey and I wanted to share with you all.  To insure that my family can continue to provide a “McConnell’ presence to the organization on a day-to-day basis, my brother Keith is returning to assist our football program and will assist our 5th and 6th  grade tackle team..

In addition to Keith’s return, Randy Norman will be stepping away from coaching to assist me with the daily administrative duties of the organization.  Randy will assist with Uniforms, Equipment, Field & Facilities, Concessions and the various other administrative responsibilities that I have tried to handle on my own over the years.

We have also asked Kevin Marks to assist Keith and I with our Football program.  Kevin will assume the Head Coaching role of our 7th & 8th  grade tackle team and along with our very talented group of Coaches will oversee a makeover of our organizational approach to how we teach, develop and manage our football teams.  Our goal is to provide our boys and young men with a consistent, building block approach to teaching that starts with flag thru our 7th & 8th   grade program.

Jeff Newkirk will continue as Head Coach of our 5th & 6th Grade team while Gregg Brick joins our tackle coaching staff as Head Coach of 3rd & 4th.  Our Flag Coaches have yet to be determined and our Head Coaches are currently working on filling their coaching staffs.  If anyone is interested in being a part our coaching program, please contact our Head Coaches ASAP.  They do plan to start spring “Coaches Meeting” in March and hope to have their staffs in place by then.

As for Cheerleading, Mickey and her very talented and very dedicated team of volunteer coaches will continue to provide our organization with one of the finest Cheerleading programs in youth football.

In other news, along with Keith’s return, the tweaking of our management responsibilities, filling coaching vacancies and building a consistent philosophy throughout our tackle program, we are also wanting to create more opportunities for volunteers to become involved in the day-to-day activities of the organization.  Jerry Sandridge will continue the never ending task of overseeing our Field & Facilities.  Jenni DeMeyer has accepted the thankless position of running our Concession stand and Kelly Theunissen will continue the equally under appreciated duties of managing our administrative and fund raising efforts.

Along with these “Team Leaders”, we will ask for volunteers from each team to assist them.  Each team will provide Randy and the Team Leaders with a volunteer representative to assist with the Trailer, Field & Facilities, Concessions and Team Mom duties.   Many of you are extremely willing to assist and we just need to do a better job of getting everyone involved.

Please feel free to contact Randy, our Head Coaches or a Team Leader if you are interested in assisting in any of these areas.

In conclusion, our Northland Chiefs organization has provided football and cheerleading opportunities for over 200 boys and girls each year for over 15 years now.  The McConnell family is dedicated to continuing those efforts and we look forward to a fun, exciting and rewarding 2012 season.

Kindest regards

Kevin, Mickey and the entire McConnell family.

Kevin McConnell, the president of our organization, has been diagnosed with stage IV colon liver cancer on January 28, 2011. Please take a moment and visit his Caring Bridge site to read his story. His sister-in-law, Alanna, is doing a fantastic job with the journal and keeping everyone up to date. Check back often to learn of the upcoming benefits that will be held for Kevin.
